Do you need special insurance for boating? If you rent a boat, are you covered under your vehicle insurance?

I am assuming that you mean a large power or sailboat and not an aluminum fishing boat at your local little fishing hole. You should be covered by the rental company, in my rental experience, I was charged a deposit that was equal to the deductible on the boat insurance policy. In any case, definitely check the rental agreement and if it doesn't specify, ASK before you sign anything. Boats are not cheap and if it is in your possession, you are going to be held responsible for any damage.

You need special insurance for boating. If you own a boat, you can check with your auto insurance provider for rates on boat insurance. If you are renting a boat, you may still want rental insurance. Often, if you're at a large enough boat rental facility, they will offer insurance for the term of the rental.

If you own a boat you have to have boat insurance. I'm not sure about renting a boat but I would ask. You may end up spending more money for the rental but it will be worth if it something happens. We own a boat and have at least one damage every summer and the repairs have NEVER been less and $3,000.00.

If you rent a boat you will be covered by the renter's insurance. No insurance of yours will be necessary.

Vehicle insurance does not cover boats, unless a trailer being towed by your car breaks away and does damage to someone. Then your vehicle liability and property damage will cover the incident to the limits of your policy.
